Coal Yard Christmas Market 2025

Our distillery is based at the Old Coal Yard in Hambledon, Surrey and our annual Christmas Market is back!

The Coal Yard hosts 16 independent small businesses and a couple of times a year we host larger events where we invite around 18 other local artisan businesses to a market. This collaboration between businesses is essential in today's climate of quick click shopping online and supports the local economy as well as building awareness of what is on offer at the Coal Yard.

An umbrella brand for the Coal Yard, namely Coal Yard Creatives , was created by Ian's partner, Alpa Cox from PM Getting It Done voluntarily to support the business community ... and her hubby of course ;-).

On November 15th 2025 between 1:30pm to 6:30pm we have lots of lovely stalls, a live band, food and our bar will be open with delicious festive drinks including gin cocktails, fizz and warming tipples!

We know how hard it can be to coordinate dates for group activities so we've invested in a new online booking system to ensure you have a quick smooth experience to check available dates and pay hassle free online.

For Ginfluencer Experiences, you can book online for two to six guests and for Full Ginfluencer experiences you now have the option to add grazing boards (in addition to the snacks we already provide). If you have a gift voucher, email us first and we can add it to the booking system to redeem your voucher. Last batch of seasonal specials

For the markets that we attended this Christmas, our Toffee Apple Gin Liqueur was sold out at every event... thank you to those of you who came and tasted it and bought a bottle or two and our return customers who restocked for this Christmas.

Unfortunately, given two major events were cancelled this Christmas due to the two stormy weekends, we're left with a bit of stock so if you didn't get to see us at those regular events you can order online and pickup from the distillery or we deliver locally for free.

Our Toffee Apple Gin Liqueur can be sipped neat, over ice or even over ice cream! It also works well alongside a cheese board as the apple and sweetness is a perfect pairing with your favourite cheese selection... what a lovely treat this Christmas!

Keeping prices as low as possible...

We hope you had a lovely time with family and friends over the festive period.

After a very busy period in the run up to Christmas we’re now enjoying a brief rest period before the business ramps up again in the coming months. January is a good time to reflect on the previous year and think about plans for 2023 and changes we’re going to make.

Like most businesses, we were hit with rising costs of everything last year – raw ingredients, packaging, glassware, transportation and energy. Since Ian started the business over 4 years ago we’ve managed to keep our prices unchanged for retail, trade and subscriber customers but it won’t be possible to continue that in 2023. So we’ve introduced a modest price increase of just £1 per bottle. We do hope you can continue to support us as a small local business.

Subscriber rates will be changing from 1st March 2023.

We have been awarded the Trade Mark Surrey Hills, an accreditation and a Mark of local provenance, quality and sustainability.

The Award promotes the very best of what Surrey has to offer and celebrates those organisations of high quality that reflect and support the distinct and special nature of the Surrey Hills and who share the values of supporting the local environment.

Becoming a member and receiving the trade mark involves an interview process with Surrey Hills Enterprise who ensure you are a Surrey Hills based business and can meet their high standards and criteria. To become a member, businesses must meet the following membership criteria:

Supporting a local resident living with MND

Most of you who know us well, will already know what our strap line 'Community Spirit' really means... as well as it being about developing our gin range with our local Ginfluencers, we're also very much about supporting our local community. Whether it is through attending fundraising events, donating raffle prizes or promoting local businesses - ultimately our aim is to work together to support each other and grow our local community.

We had met local Godalming resident, Paul Jameson, when running our bar at a fundraising event in Witley in September 2021 - Rejoice the Voice. The community had come together to host an amazing music festival with lots of professional and amateur bands and singers. All in aid of raising money for MND and to help Paul tick off one of his bucket list items to host a music festival.

Later that year, Paul and a group of friends came to the distillery for a gin experience for a friends birthday and after conversations with Ian about how we produce bespoke branded gin, Paul came up with an idea! The government announced that £50 million was going to go into funding for MND research so to celebrate, 50 Million Gin was created! To help with the fundraising effort, Ian offered to donate £8 per bottle to MNDA .

The gin was launched in April 2022 and the 50 Million Gin team worked hard to get the word out to their network. A hugely successful launch party was held in Brook, Surrey which hosted David Kirby's amazing jazz band and local talents. Even we got to drink and dance! Since the launch we have raised over 3.5K thanks to everyone who has purchased a bottle.

Mobile Gin Bar - Horse Trailer Conversion Project

How to build your own mobile bar

This is our fourth summer of events and we’re always learning and looking to make improvements. After many years of using our lovely branded gazebo, we felt it was time to invest in something that would reduce the time and effort in setting up and taking down at events and also allow us to attend more than one event on the same day. So... last year I came across an old, rather down-at-heel horsebox (don't let the photos below fool you!) and decided to take on the project to convert into our mobile gin bar!

We started the conversion project in September 2021 and decided from the outset that we’d do everything to as high a standard as possible. That meant completely gutting the trailer, stripping back to bare metal and rebuilding to our exact specification. Like most things we do, we were keen to do it ourselves wherever possible. So after watching every Youtube video on horse trailer conversion we made a start.

Because of its size we had to keep it outdoors so the work had to fit around the weather and of course our day jobs! It was a great excuse to buy some new power tools and learn new techniques (thanks again Youtube!).

The first 2 months or so were stripping back to bare metal and prepping the chassis which was actually in reasonable condition given that it had been sitting in a field for the last 20 years. Then we started constructing the internal framing and panelling. We wanted to make the finished trailer as flexible as possible for different types of so we designed the power system be able to run off a generator, electric hook-up or internal battery power. There were a couple of parts of the project where it just didn’t make sense to do ourselves to we used a specialist fabricator for the hatch for example.

It was now spring and the better weather allowed us to work on the trailer more often and so progress really sped up. We called on a couple of very clever friends to help out with some of the more skilled joinery and the internal structure of cupboards, shelves, bar top and work surfaces came together quickly. The outside was primed and sprayed and new prop stands, mudguards and lights were installed. Finally the branding was applied and we were done!

As you’d expect we learned quite a bit on its first couple of outings (like how much internal movement there is when it’s being towed – ratchet straps are your friend!), and we made adjustments accordingly. It’ll make our lives much easier at events and we think it looks fantastic. If you're interested in hiring us and our mobile bar email us .

Which experience and how to book

The experiences range from 30 mins to 2.5 hours so it really depends on how long you have as to which experience you may want to book. The Distillery Tour & Ginfluencer experience is a relaxing 2/2.5 hours and you have the chance to blend your own gin as well as purchase your own concoction!

Blackberry Gin Liqueur

We launched our range of Gin Liqueurs in the first lockdown to offer easy to make home cocktails to our customers - they had been so popular we decided to keep them going!

Our first Gin Liqueur flavours were Elderflower and Raspberry and we then created an autumn special at the end of last year - our popular Toffee Apple Liqueur which will be available again soon.

After a long wait we have finally been able to run our gin bar at local events and our Bramble cocktails went down a storm - so it inspired Ian to produce a Blackberry Gin Liqueur just in time to coincide with the lovely blackberries bursting from the brambles in our garden! Make sure you grab some of your garden blackberries and freeze them to use as a garnish for this moreish gin liqueur!

Richard's Excess Hot Air!

We've always been passionate about doing our bit to reduce waste and have recycled our gin bottles since the day we started, used paper instead of plastic where we can and have recently been able to offer refills too since we opened our distillery earlier this year.

BUT... this has been the most exciting addition to our fight against waste! Our neighbour two units down from us is an amazing ceramic tile company, Froyles Tiles, owned by Richard Miller and he has a lot of hot air coming out of his kilns. Ian saw this as an opportunity to pump the excess heat from Richard's unit into his very cold unit through this simple but clever conduit which runs through the gap in the roofline!

We love to collaborate with our neighbours but never thought we'd be sharing hot air!

Komo's New Bespoke Gin

Delayed by lockdown, but we got there...

When Richard Tye, Finance Director of Komo Cocktail Bar in Guildford, popped into his local Haslemere Gin Festival in June 2019, he was met with the launch of our new Haslemere Gin (developed with our Haslemere Ginfluencers).

A few conversations later and we were supplying our gin to the bar and organised a mini gin experience for Surrey Chambers hosting Surrey Young Professionals. Attendees received a welcome G&T and tasted individually distilled botanicals as well as having a go at making a cocktail with their extremely talented bartenders ...

After a successful evening, we discussed how we could build the partnership further and Richard was keen to host a Ginfluencer event to develop a Komo bespoke gin!

Richard invited his Ginfluencers to Komo's private room in February 2020 where Ian guided the guests to understand, explore and rate a variety of botanicals and make their own gin blends. The results were reviewed and Komo management and bartenders tasted a few candidate blends to determine the final one that would be perfect to serve at the bar for G&T's as well as a base for gin cocktails. And the result was a perfectly balanced citrus and spice combination of orange, grapefruit, ginger, lemongrass and cassia.

The pandemic impacted the bar hard as it had to close it's doors with an uncertain future, but we're pleased that they have come out of the other side and are able to help them celebrate with their own branded gin!

New Distillery Now Open!

Stop by and say hello from August...

We're so pleased to have finally been able to complete the move to our new location at the Old Coal Yard in Hambledon. Perfectly situated next door to the Merry Harriers , a beautiful 16th Century pub and amongst other Coal Yard Creatives , we couldn't have asked for a better location where community spirit is at the heart of it all.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to have the grand opening we'd hoped for but we've already invited our monthly gin subscribers and stockists to exclusive pre-opening tours and look forward to giving them a sneak peak of our micro-distillery. We do everything by hand here from crushing the botanicals used to vapour infuse the gin to labelling and packaging. There are no fancy big machines but the quality and care in each bottle is evident in each sip of your crafted gin.

Ian would love to give you a tour so buy a voucher online and we'll email you to arrange a date (with social distancing and precautions of course!) or you can stop by and pick up a bottle ( contact us first in case Ian is out doing deliveries or walking Rico).

You can even get everything you need for your next garden party - cakes, party supplies and catering or checkout the crafts to improve your home including joinery, upholstery and tiles. Hospitality at it's best...

When Andrew Henning, General Manager of The Westbury Mayfair , London attended a Ginfluencer event to contribute to the development of our seasonal special, Vann Lane Summer Spirit, little did we know it would lead to us creating a bespoke gin for the prestigious hotel!

The Westbury has hospitality down to a fine art and they know how to bring exciting experiences to their guests in a perfect setting within their beautiful private rooms. With the help of the talented team at The Westbury, we hosted a Ginfluencer event with some of their VIP clients to start the journey which would result in the creation of the Westbury Gin.

The Ginfluencer event took place on 6th February 2020 in the Pine Room. As we arrived to set up we knew this was going to be an exceptional event with attention to detail from all parties - the pristine white tablecloth was being ironed in situ and gorgeous flowers placed in the centre of the table.

We even managed to sneak in a cheeky drink at the Polo Bar before the start of the event which was, as expected, a delightful experience with attentive service paired with a relaxed and buzzing atmosphere.

Everyone was extremely engaged and with some of them being in the event, food and drinks industry it was amazing to receive positive feedback on our gin and our concept as well as the success of the evening. It was a pleasure to meet individuals who have created their own successes in a variety of industries from Art Galleries, Designers & Jewellers to Event Planners and Journalists.

The Westbury had organised some delicious canapés including oysters and mini fish and chips (which went down very well to soak up the gin!) as well as lots of other delightful nibbles. Our guests also had the opportunity to try our Haslemere Gin , a delicate and floral gin.

The evening came to an end and we were extremely grateful to have been invited to host such a unique experience at The Westbury in the heart of Mayfair.

We took the feedback and plotted it into a chart so we could easily see which botanicals were the favourites. It was clear that the Ginfluencers had quite a spicy palate with a touch of citrus (in fact very similar to our very own Vann Lane Gin ).

So what's next? Well, we've schedule Round 2 for Mar 4th where we'll be taking 3 different candidate gin blends to our Ginfluencers to give them the opportunity to decide which blend will become THE Westbury Gin!

2019 - Year in Review & Looking Ahead

We've achieved a lot in 2019 - thanks to our community

New ventures can be exciting, exhausting and a steep learning curve and trust me, at Village Spirit we've experienced all of this in a very short time. From the start, we've always been open to seeing where the business takes us and ensuring we're listening to our customers to understand what they really want instead of independently creating a product and claiming it's the best they'll ever taste.

So... thank you all for being part of our story in 2019! I'm sure we haven't mentioned everyone but you know who you are.
